Free Crochet Pattern - Winter Hat for Your Amigurumi

Welcome! I hope you enjoy making this little winter hat!

I've included the instructions for making a smaller hat, which is 4.25 inches in diameter - used for my smaller animals, such as the sloth, chick, snowman, tiny turtle, etc. And a bigger hat size, which is 5 inches in diameter - used for my larger-headed animals such as my duck, turtle, etc.

Please don't hesitate to contact me at hello@theresascrochetshop.com with any questions that you may have along the way. Happy crocheting!

Materials You Will Need:

  • Crochet hook size: 5mm
  • Medium/worsted/aran weight yarn: blue, or other color of your choice
  • Yarn needle
  • Fork or pom pom maker
  • Blue sewing thread and a sewing needle for securing the yarn ends

Abbreviations:

ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Note: In my patterns, I begin each circle with “ch 2, 6 sc in first ch.” Another way of beginning is to start with a magic circle. If you are more familiar with this method, just do 6 sc into your magic circle.

Winter Hat – Smaller Size

Diameter: 4.25 in (10.75 cm)

Small Hat

With blue yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)
R2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st. (12 sts)
R3: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join. (24 sts)
R4: Ch 2, (dc in first 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times, join. (30 sts)
R5-7: Dc 30. (30 sts x 3 rounds)

You will now be making the ear flaps from where you ended R7,
R8: Turn, sc in next 4 sts. (4 sts)
R9: Turn, sc in next 3 sts. (3 sts)
R10: Turn, sc in next 2 sts. (2 sts)
R11: Turn, sc in next st. (1 st)

Fasten off, leaving a short yarn tail for weaving in.

Now, lay the hat flat to find the opposite side of the hat for the other ear flap (it does not have to be exact). Do a slip stitch to attach your blue yarn to the hat, and then repeat Rounds 8-11 to make the second ear flap. Then instead of fastening off, sc a border around the hat until you are back where you started.

Fasten off. Weave the yarn ends in to the inside of the hat. (Don’t bother weaving in the beginning yarn end at the very top of the hat; you will hide this one in the pom pom later.) Use some matching blue sewing thread and a needle to stitch the yarn ends to the inside of the hat to secure them. Cut off the extra yarn and thread strands.

For the tassels: Cut 6 strands of blue yarn that are each about 10 inches long.

Insert your crochet hook (begin on the inside of the ear flap) into the st at the end of the ear flap. Take 3 of the strands of yarn and wrap them around the hook. Use the hook to pull all the strands through the ear flap. This will form a loop on the inside of the ear flap. Take the strands and put them through the loop you created. Pull tight to make a knot.

Braid these strands; once you've braided to the length you like, tie a knot, and trim off the extra yarn. Repeat for the second tassel.

Now all you have left to make is the pom pom! Use a pom pom maker to make a 1-inch pom pom; or if you don't have a pom pom maker, you can easily use a fork to make one (see my YouTube tutorial)! Sew the pom pom to the top of the hat. Pull your remaining yarn tail from the pom pom through the pom pom and trim. Then pull the beginning yarn tail from the hat also through the pom pom and trim.

And there you go, you are finished!

Here’s how to make a slightly larger hat size...

Winter Hat – Bigger Size

Diameter: 5 in (12.75 cm)

Big Hat

With blue yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)
R2: Ch 2, 2 double crochet in each st around, join with sl st. (12 sts)
R3: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join. (24 sts)
R4: Ch 2, (dc in first st, 2dc in next st) 12 times, join. (36 sts)
R5-8: Dc 36. (36 sts x 4 rounds)

You will now be making the ear flaps from where you ended R8,
R9: Turn, sc in next 4 sts. (4 sts)
R10: Turn, sc in next 3 sts. (3 sts)
R11: Turn, sc in next 2 sts. (2 sts)
R12: Turn, sc in next st. (1 st)

Fasten off, leaving a short yarn tail for weaving in.
